Best Places to Overland in Utah: 5 Favorite 4Runner Camping Spots
If you're planning an overlanding trip to Utah, here are our top five must-stop destinations recommended by a Utah-based overlanding and off-road shop.
Keep Utah Trails Open
Before we get into the list, please respect these areas. Stay on marked trails, clean up after yourself, camp only where allowed, and leave these places better than you found them.
Dispersed camping is getting harder to find every year. If you care about public land access, consider supporting groups like the Blue Ribbon Coalition.
How We Ranked These Utah Overlanding Spots
- Adventure to access: The harder it is to get there, the fewer people you usually find.
- Epic views: A good campsite needs a view worth waking up to.
- Things to do: Trails, hikes, fishing, dogs, dirt bikes, or a nearby town all help.
- Availability: The best spots have room to spread out or are less obvious to the average camper.
Moab Overlanding
Moab might surprise some people on this list. Dispersed camping is limited and there are plenty of restrictions, but with the right planning, it is still one of the best overlanding destinations in Utah.
Pro tip: Use ONX Offroad or another reliable trail app to make sure you are camping legally. We like staying near Gemini Bridges and taking Slot Canyon back into town.
On our last trip, we ran Hell’s Revenge and camped out of the rigs the same night. You are surrounded by classic Utah scenery, with Arches National Park, petroglyphs, dinosaur history, and world-class trails all within reach.
Warner Valley and Sand Hollow
Warner Valley is perfect if you do not mind getting the rig dirty or spending a full day in the sun. With Sand Hollow close by and access to thousands of OHV routes, there is always something to do.
Finding a campsite is usually easy, and a lot of the dispersed camping options have wide-open desert views. Downtown St. George is close enough for supplies, food, or a reset day.
If you are into dirt bikes, this area has jumps, whoops, washes, and famous singletrack. Add in the red rock terrain, lake access, and reliable camping, and Warner Valley becomes one of the best all-around 4Runner overlanding spots in Utah.
Valley of the Gods
Valley of the Gods is one of the most scenic areas in Utah. It sits near Mexican Hat and has massive rock formations, wide-open desert views, and enough room to feel like you actually got away from everything.
You will not find a lot of amenities nearby, but that is part of the appeal. If you want a quiet camp, big views, and a remote desert feel, Valley of the Gods is hard to beat.
Pro tip: If the area has fewer activities, bring your own. A projector, guitar, spikeball, camp games, or painting supplies can turn a quiet remote camp into a trip people remember.
Uinta-Caché National Forest
The Uinta-Caché National Forest covers a huge part of northern Utah, and almost anywhere you go has potential. Some of our favorite spots are past Kamas, where you can find lakeside campsites, forest roads, river crossings, puddles, rocky sections, and enough technical driving to make the trip feel earned.
There is excellent fishing, tons of hiking, and Heber City is close enough for food or supplies. Wildlife is common too. We have seen moose, elk, deer, coyotes, and occasionally even wolves in the area.
If you want cooler weather, trees, lakes, and real mountain camping, the Uintas are one of the best places to take a 4Runner overlanding in Utah.
Hanksville and Capitol Reef
Hanksville and Capitol Reef are our number one pick for Utah overlanding. The area has the right mix of views, trails, camping, small-town character, and nearby places to explore.
Capitol Reef National Park is just down the road, Goblin Valley is not far away, and Lake Powell is within reach depending on your route. Hanksville itself is small, but it has local shops, fuel, food, and the famous gas station built into the mountain.
Swing Arm City is close by and has some of the best OHV terrain around, especially for dirt bikes. You can also find hikes, water crossings, desert routes, and wide-open views.
The real highlight is Moonscape Overlook. Camping there feels like you are parked on the edge of another planet. Wake up early for sunrise and you will understand why this is one of our favorite overlanding spots in Utah.
Toquerville Falls and Lava Hot Springs
Toquerville Falls did not make the main list because it is smaller, often crowded, and has fewer nearby activities. That said, camping near the waterfall is still a killer experience if you catch it at the right time.
Lava Hot Springs is another fun option, especially if you want a more relaxed trip. Just come prepared if you camp in muddy conditions. Bring 4WD, traction boards, and a winch.
