The Best Interior Mods for a 4th Gen 4Runner That Actually Make It Feel Modern Again

The Best Interior Mods for a 4th Gen 4Runner That Actually Make It Feel Modern Again

06 15, 26

The 4th gen Toyota 4Runner is one of Toyota’s best SUVs. They’re comfortable, reliable, capable off-road, and it’s not hard to find one still going strong with 250,000+ miles.

The problem is they don’t always age gracefully.

The drivetrain holds up, but the interior starts to feel dated. The technology, seats, plastics, lighting, and storage layout all come from a different era. That doesn’t mean the truck is outdated. It just means a few smart upgrades can make it feel a lot more modern.

We’ve tried a lot of interior mods on 4th gen 4Runners. Some were absolutely worth it. Some weren’t. These are the interior upgrades that made the biggest difference in comfort, function, and everyday usability.

#5 Seat Swap

Custom seat swap in a 4th gen 4Runner.

This is probably the most unconventional mod on the list.

We swapped in a set of STX seats. It wasn’t a simple bolt-in install. It took bracket work, welding, and some patience, but the end result was worth it.

If you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, comfort matters. Whether you’re commuting, driving to Moab, or heading out for a weekend camping trip, better seats make every mile more enjoyable.

Factory 4th gen seats aren’t terrible, but after twenty years most are worn, collapsed, stained, or just not as comfortable as they used to be. A seat upgrade isn’t the first mod most people think about, but it can completely change how the truck feels.

#4 Double Din Head Unit and Audio System

This mod made the truck feel the most modern.

We installed a JVC double din head unit and paired it with a full JBL audio system. We even retrofitted a DVD player into the center console back when that was still a thing.

Today, most people are probably more interested in Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, backup cameras, and wireless features than DVDs, but the point is the same: a modern head unit transforms the interior.

Navigation, music, phone calls, podcasts, and camera visibility all become dramatically better than the factory setup.

We got ours from Crutchfield and highly recommend them for car audio. Their install guides, wiring support, and vehicle-specific information make the process much easier.

#3 Molle Panel and Shelf System

4R Customs molle panel and shelf system for 4th gen 4Runner cargo storage.

Once you start wheeling, camping, overlanding, or simply carrying gear regularly, organization becomes a big deal.

One of the most useful interior upgrades we’ve added is our 4th gen 4Runner molle panel with optional shelf.

It seems simple, but once you use it, you won’t want to go back.

Recovery gear, radios, first aid kits, flashlights, tools, battery packs, and camping equipment can all be secured instead of rolling around in the cargo area. Adding the shelf gives you even more usable storage without taking over the whole back of the truck.

This is one of those mods that makes every trip easier, whether you’re daily driving, camping, or heading deep into the backcountry.

Best for: recovery gear, radios, tools, first aid kits, camping gear, and keeping the cargo area organized.

#2 LED Gauge Cluster Conversion

LED gauge cluster conversion while soldering the new lights.

This is my favorite budget mod.

The stock gauge lights on a 4th gen 4Runner look dated, especially once the bulbs start fading. We swapped in LED bulbs from Amazon, spent a couple hours with a soldering iron, and ended up with a gauge cluster that looked years newer.

It cost us around $30 and some time in the garage.

If soldering isn’t your thing, T4R Rewired offers complete cluster conversions and interior lighting upgrades. You can buy components or send your cluster in for installation.

Check out T4R Rewired for LED gauge cluster and interior lighting upgrades.

For the money, this is one of the best visual upgrades you can do to the interior.

#1 Aftermarket Steering Wheel

If you do one interior mod, upgrade the steering wheel.

You touch the steering wheel every single time you drive. Most factory 4th gen steering wheels are worn, faded, cracked, or peeling by now.

A good aftermarket wheel instantly updates the interior and makes the truck feel better from the driver’s seat.

We offer several aftermarket steering wheel options for the 4th gen 4Runner.

Leather, carbon fiber, perforated leather, and custom stitching all make a noticeable difference. It’s one of the few mods that improves both the look and feel every day.

If your goal is to make an older 4Runner feel newer from the driver’s seat, start with the steering wheel.

Honorable Mentions

Wolf Box Digital Rear View Mirror

The Wolf Box system really helps rear visibility, especially if you have drawers, gear, a rooftop tent, or anything else blocking the rear window.

Auxbeam and Switch Panels

A switch panel keeps your wiring clean and makes controlling lights and accessories much easier.

Auxbeam makes solid options, and Diode Dynamics switch systems are also great. You can browse our 4th gen 4Runner electrical and power management solutions here.

Drawer Systems

A drawer system turns your cargo area into organized storage. For tools, recovery gear, camping equipment, and everyday carry items, it’s tough to beat.

Black Interior Paint

This is one modification we probably wouldn’t do again.

Painting interior panels black looked great at first, but it got dirty faster and scratched easier than expected. It can work, but it takes more prep and maintenance than most people realize.

Because of that, we’re testing another solution.

Taco Vinyl Interior Door Skins

Taco Vinyl interior door skins for a cleaner blacked-out 4th gen 4Runner interior.

Vinyl door skins give you a blacked-out interior look with a cleaner, more factory-style finish than paint.

We’ll post a full review after more testing.

Final Thoughts

Most 4Runner mod lists focus on suspension, bumpers, tires, armor, and lighting.

Those upgrades matter, but you use the interior every day.

The best 4th gen 4Runner interior mods make the truck more comfortable, more organized, and more enjoyable every time you drive.

Many of these upgrades cost less than a lift kit or set of tires, but they can make your 4Runner feel years newer.

For a 4Runner that already refuses to die, that’s a smart investment.
